South Downs Courtyard Garden

A substantial rebuild by these sociable entertainers resulted in a quadrant of buildings with a protected inner courtyard and a less formal outer lawned garden. The clients had a specific vision to use available sunlight at different times of the day in the inner courtyard to make the best of sociable areas - be it morning papers with coffee, or an impromptu evening music session, the inner courtyard provides it all. The hard surfaces provide textural contrast using crushed gravel planted scree balanced with tough rugged and practical limestone. The planting scheme is soft and mediterranean with some vibrant beaten copper Bell Jars converted to bubbling water features, cooling the Courtyard in high Summer. The outer garden is now underway and will maximise the stunning views over the South Downs, seen from abundant planting surrounding a croquet lawn.
